United Way of Lackawanna, Wayne & Pike encouraging people to Dress Down for Dolly United Way of Lackawanna, Wayne & Pike is asking employers to encourage their employees to Dress Down for Dolly on September 25. Employees can dress down, wear some pink and add some Dolly Parton-inspired sparkle, or simply celebrate the day together. Those who participate are also encouraged to donate either $9, $2 or $5 (in honor of 9/25) to United Way of Lackawanna, Wayne & Pike. Every dollar raised will support Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Lackawanna County, which provides free, age-appropriate books directly to children from birth through age five. To date, more than 110,000 books have been sent to children throughout Lackawanna County through the program, with over 2,800 kids currently receiving books each month. If a dress-down day doesn’t work for your organization, you can consider hosting a bake sale, setting up a “Dolly Day” coffee jar, holding a small raffle or creating your own fun way to honor Dolly Parton.
WRC hosting 50th Golden Jubilee WRC, Inc. in Scranton is hosting its 50th Golden Jubilee on October 22 to celebrate the organization’s legacy, recognize the community members that have helped make its work possible, and look ahead to the organization’s next chapter. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Lace by Epicurean in Scranton. The evening’s program will offer guests an inside look at the critical services WRC provides, including housing, legal advocacy, and crisis support. Guests will also learn more about WRC’s pet program, which helps ensure that survivors do not have to choose between their own safety and the safety of their beloved pets. As part of the celebration, WRC will honor the Hawk and Frieder Families, whose steadfast support and commitment to WRC have helped advance the organization’s mission for decades. Scranton Counseling Center to host Illuminating Hope event Scranton Counseling Center’s Illuminating Hope event will take place on Wednesday, October 14 from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Lace by Epicurean (1315 Meylert Avenue Building 3 in Scranton). The event will celebrate World Mental Health Day. There will be a cash bar, appetizers, raffle baskets, and meaningful conversation about the importance of accessible mental health care in the community. Tickets are $100 per person and can be purchased here. All proceeds from the event will go toward funding the programs and operations at Scranton Counseling Center. Mutts & Motors Car Show happening September 13 The Mutts & Motors Car Show is scheduled for Sunday, September 13 and will benefit the animals at Griffin Pond Animal Shelter. Gates will open at 9:00 a.m. at 946 Griffin Pond Road in South Abington Township, and vehicles must be on the field by 11:00 a.m. for judging. It costs $10 to register a car or truck, and the top five vehicles will will trophies. The public can attend the event for free with the option to donate to Griffin Pond Animal Shelter. Lackawanna Blind Association’s memorial golf tournament rescheduled The Lackawanna Blind Association’s 39th annual William J. Jordan, M.D. “Swing for Sight” Memorial Golf Tournament has been rescheduled to Monday, August 17, at Glen Oak Country Club in Clarks Summit. The event was rescheduled due to the weather. The tournament will feature a Captain & Crew format, as well as a $10,000 hole-in-one prize and skill-based contests. Community members, business leaders and supporters are welcome to take part in the tournament, which supports programs that empower people who are blind or visually impaired throughout Lackawanna and Susquehanna Counties. Chicken BBQ Dinner to Benefit Community Intervention Center Grab dinner and support a great cause by attending a drive-thru Chicken BBQ Dinner on August 15 from 2-4 p.m. The event will be at the Waverly United Methodist Church on Church Street in Waverly. For $15 per person, you’ll get 1/2 pound of barbecue chicken, a baked potato, cole slaw, dessert and rolls. A portion of each dinner will benefit the Community Intervention Center in Scranton. It is a behavioral health recovery drop-in center and homeless day shelter located on North 6th Avenue in Scranton.
NEPA Youth Shelter Announces Save The Date For Fundraiser NEPA Youth Shelter is encouraging community members to save the date for its upcoming NEPA Youth Voices fundraiser on Saturday, October 17, 2026 at the Ritz Theater. Doors for the event will open at 5:00 p.m., with the show beginning at 6:00 p.m. The fundraiser will support the mission and ongoing efforts of NEPA Youth Shelter while bringing the community together for an evening of entertainment and engagement. Marywood Event Raises More Than $466,000 Marywood University’s flagship annual fundraising event, Celebrate Marywood, took place on Thursday, May 7, 2026. The outdoor celebration, held in the picturesque Motherhouse and Seminary Morgan Memorial Garden, marked a significant milestone by raising more than $466,000 to support the renovation and transformation of the Center for Natural & Health Sciences. Since its inception in 2014, the event has raised over $4.6 million, with the 2026 total setting a new benchmark for generosity and community engagement. Proceeds from this year’s event will fund the renovation and transformation of the Center for Natural & Health Sciences into a state-of-the-art facility supporting nursing, physician assistant, pre-med, and science programs, including upgraded laboratory spaces, enhanced classrooms, and advanced simulation environments. Marywood’s natural and health sciences students, who consistently attain outstanding licensure pass rates ranging from 98% to 100%, gain the knowledge and hands-on experience that power the region’s healthcare and STEM workforce. This year, Marywood honored Virginia Doherty McGregor, Scranton, and Father Thomas M. Muldowney, Moscow, with the Inspire Award for their outstanding contributions to the university and the broader region. The celebration’s entertainment featured dueling pianos by The Philly Keys and fireworks on campus. President Lisa A.
