Misericordia To Host Lecture on Digital Archives DALLAS TWP., Pa. – Having found not one, but two lost books written by Walt Whitman, Zachary Turpin, Ph.D., will share his insights into the use of digital archives in search of more great literary finds during a free lecture at Misericordia University on Monday, Oct. 1. The program, “‘Missing Me One Place, Search Another’: Keywords, Digital Archives, and the Search for the Next Great American Novel,” is sponsored by the Soyka Fund for the Humanities and the Department of History and Government at Misericordia University. It will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Alden Trust Room 219 of Sandy and Marlene Insalaco Hall on campus. Dr. Turpin is assistant professor of American Literature at the University of Idaho, and a Kluge Fellow of the Library of Congress. In 2015 and 2016, Dr. Turpin found Walt Whitman manuscripts, “Life and Adventures of Jack Engle,” a Dickensian city mystery novel, and “Manly Health and Training,” a hair-raising, kitchen-sink wellness guide for urban men, through archival research. His additional recoveries include texts by Mark Twain, Pulitzer-Prize winning poet Anne Sexton and “Wizard of Oz” author L. Frank Baum, among others. Dr. Turpin will discuss the allure of the archive in the digital age, and how keyword searching and digitization makes textual recovery cheaper, easier, and more effective than ever – and more important to literary archives. In his talk, Dr. Turpin will explain how, far from being in the final days of great literary finds, the literary field is entering a new era of digital sleuthing and discovery. He will conclude his presentation by naming two more lost Whitman novels and will share with the audience where and how to begin looking for them. A scholar of 19th-century American literature, Dr. Turpin’s interests include digital humanities, textual recovery, periodical culture and the sciences, and epistemology, a branch of philosophy that investigates the origin, nature, methods, and limits of human knowledge. His work has appeared in the “Walt Whitman Quarterly Review,” “ESQ,” “Leviathan,” “Tulsa Studies in Women’s Literature,” “J19,” “American Literary Realism,” and “The Baum Bugle.” He is under contract for a book to be released in 2019 entitled, “Whitman Redux: Secret Fictions, Sentimentalism, and the Birth of Leaves of Grass,” (Iowa City: University of Iowa Press.) For additional information on Dr. Turpin’s talk, please contact Luke Williams, Ph.D., assistant professor of history, at rwilliams1@misericordia.edu, 570-674-3047. Steamtown National Historic Site To Host Railfest 2018 SCRANTON, Pa. – Railfest 2018 at Steamtown National Historic Site (NHS) in downtown Scranton is a celebration of railroading’s past, present and future. Held annually on the Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend, this year’s event takes place on September 1 and 2, with an opening ceremony on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m., hosted by park Superintendent Debbie Conway. Unique this year is an opportunity for children six years of age and under to “Name the Train”! Our hardworking Baldwin Locomotive Works #26 steam engine is green with envy and wants a name after always hearing from kids about Thomas, Percy, Gordon and others. So during Railfest, youngsters can offer their ideas to name the train. The winning name will be selected at the end of Railfest and #26 will enjoy that name until Railfest 2019. Baldwin #26 is already smiling at the thought of having a name! If you haven’t previously been to Railfest, it’s a celebration of all things railroading. Our 2018 theme is “Railroading and Coal: A Labor of Love,” recognizing the 250th anniversary of anthracite coal’s importance to the region and nation. Steamtown NHS works with numerous partners to present this end-of-summer family-friendly festivity featuring live music, themed displays, special shop demonstrations, train rides, and much more! Besides offering a free pre-Railfest Johnny Cash Experience tribute concert by David Stone beginning at 7:30 pm on Friday night, August 31, in the site’s Theater, there will be live music throughout the park during Railfest. Besides David Stone and Steamtown NHS’s own John Bibalo doing their entertaining “Ring of Fire” musical presentation both days, enjoy concerts by local bands Graces Downfall (rock), American Buffalo Ghost (folk), and Nick & Chris (rock) on Saturday, September 1. The hits keep coming on Sunday, September 2. Jay Smar buttresses our Railfest theme with his foot-tapping “NE PA Coal ‘n Folk” music. Other free concerts include Steve Werner playing his uniquely soothing hand pan, as well as Sweetness (folk), The Boastfuls (pop acoustic), and heavy metal, where else but in our locomotive repair shop! Our variety of musical offerings are sure to please! Visitors will also be able to enjoy a Theater showing of historic railroad images from our glass plate negative collection. The collection, part of our extensive archives, was recently highlighted in a local Sunday newspaper cover story that has been picked up by other newspapers across the region. Those images further compliment the Railfest theme linking coal and railroading. Adults (ages 16 and above) may purchase a special $10 one-day or a $15 two-day Railfest pass at the Steamtown NHS information booth upon arrival. Please note that America the Beautiful passes are not accepted for admission to this special event. While children to age 5 can experience this event for free, children 6-15 years of age will require a $7 one–day pass or a $10 two-day pass. Among the many Railfest events, the special entrance pass affords visitors of all ages the opportunity to enjoy a short train ride through the park, to hop aboard our caboose for a quick jaunt, watch locomotive shop staff operate our giant-sized equipment used to repair engines, power a hand-pump maintenance car, take a ride on a maintenance motor car, and have photos taken with Miss Phoebe Snow, namesake of the Lackawanna Railroad’s crack passenger express train. Other activities include 1/8-scale steam train rides, model train layouts, magicians, and other family-friendly events. Be sure not to miss the special Lego trains that will be on display. Visitors can also enjoy our museums and two very special photo exhibitions; The Call of Trains is a sampling of legendary railroad photographer Jim Shaughnessy’s more than 50 years of masterful railroad photography, while Scott Herring, our local Last Anthracite Photographer, will help us celebrate anthracite coal’s 250th anniversary as the fuel that helped spur the American industrial revolution and railroad expansion. While still family-friendly, here’s something for diehard rail fans! On Saturday, September 1, with the purchase of a special ticket, visitors can relish in a 5-6 hour long exclusive excursion experience on two passenger railroads running the Northeast PA Railfest Flyer. Enjoy the first section, from Steamtown NHS to Moscow PA, in the foothills of the Pocono Mountains. There you can tour the historic passenger and freight depots, then enjoy a light lunch (hotdog, snack, soda) on the station grounds. From Moscow you will be bussed to historic Lackawaxen PA, where you will board more vintage railroad equipment for a trip along the scenic Lackawaxen River. This Flyer section, operated by the Stourbridge Line will terminate in Honesdale PA, where awaiting busses will transport you back to Steamtown NHS. Cost for this all-inclusive excursion, which includes Railfest admission for both days, is $80 for those aged 13 years and above, and $60 for accompanied youth ages 3-12. Those younger than age 3 are free provided they sit on a parent’s lap. Tickets are limited and are sure to sell quickly. Tickets may be purchased online at: http://www.laurellines.org/railfesttrip.html On Sunday morning, September 2, railfans are in for another treat as noted photographer and Railroad & Railfan editor, Steve Barry, will lead a special photo shoot opportunity using vintage Central Railroad of New Jersey-flagged diesel and passenger equipment. Steve will share his decades of experience with participants during several stops at hard to reach locations. Space is limited and costs $30 in addition to the Railfest event fee. Tickets can be reserved by calling (570) 340-5204. Visitors seeking a more leisurely family-friendly train ride can enjoy round-trip excursions to Moscow PA, on either Saturday or Sunday, in vintage passenger cars pulled by historic diesel locomotives. Fares for these trips are $24 for adults ages 16 to 61, $22 for seniors aged 62 and older, and $17 for accompanied children ages 6-15. Children ages 5 and younger accompanied by an adult require a “no-charge” ticket. Railfest information is available at www.nps.gov/stea/planyourvisit/railfest.htm. Also watch for updates on our Facebook page, at: https://www.facebook.com/Steamtown-National-Historic-Site-151286568217222/?ref=bookmarks Other event partners include Lackawanna County’s Electric City Trolley Museum, which hopes to offer an expanded schedule of trolley rides along a portion of the former Laurel Line. Remember to bring along your appetite for great eats and treats as food trucks and a real railroad dining car will be on site, and La Festa Italiana, which takes place at nearby Courthouse Square, have many food options. The County of Lackawanna Transit System (COLTS) will provide free shuttle service between Steamtown NHS and La Festa during the park’s operating hours on both days. For more information on the Trolley Museum, phone (570) 963-6590; information on La Festa Italiana is available at www.lafestaitaliana.org. Located in downtown Scranton, Pa., Steamtown NHS is open daily from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily. From I-81 follow exit 185 (Central Scranton Expressway); then follow the brown and white signs to the park entrance at Lackawanna Avenue and Cliff Street (GPS: N 41.41, W 75.67). General park information is available by phoning (570) 340-5206 during regular business hours, or by visiting the park website anytime. www.nps.gov/stea
PennDOT Provides REAL ID Update Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Deputy Secretary for Driver and Vehicle Services Kurt Myers provided an update today on Pennsylvania’s progress toward compliance with the federal REAL ID Act, and how customers can apply for REAL ID pre-verification in PennDOT driver license centers in the coming weeks. Because PennDOT may already have electronic documents on file for approximately 35 percent of its total customers, individuals who received their first PA driver’s license or ID card after September 2003, these customers have had the option to apply for REAL ID pre-verification online since March. Most of PennDOT’s customers, however, received their initial product BEFORE September 2003, so PennDOT does not have their required REAL ID documents on file. Customers in this group who want a REAL ID will need to bring the required documents to a Driver’s License Center so they can be verified in person. Beginning September 1, these customers may bring the required documents to any PennDOT driver license center. Federal regulations require that to be issued a REAL ID-compliant product, PennDOT must verify the following documents: Proof of Identity (Original or certified copy of a birth certificate with a raised seal or valid U.S. Passport) Proof of Social Security Number (Unlaminated social security card) Proof of all Legal Name Changes (Marriage certificate or court order issued by your county’s family court) Two Proofs of Current, Physical PA Address (Current, unexpired PA license or ID and a no more than 90-day-old bank statement or utility bill with the same name and address) PennDOT staff will image the documents to the customer’s record, and when REAL IDs are available in March 2019, the customer can opt into the REAL ID program online, and their REAL ID product will be sent through the mail, eliminating any need for this customer to visit a Driver License Center. To obtain a REAL ID, customers will pay a one-time fee of $30, plus a renewal fee (current renewal fee is $30.50 for a four-year non-commercial driver’s license or a photo ID). The expiration date of their initial REAL ID product will include any time remaining on their existing non-REAL ID product, plus an additional four years, unless the customer is over 65 and has a two-year license. This expiration date structure means that the customer won’t “lose” time that they’ve already paid for. After the initial REAL ID product expires, the customer will pay no additional fee, beyond regular renewal fees, to renew a REAL ID product. When REAL IDs are available, customers will have three options for obtaining a REAL ID product: pre-verified customers may order their REAL ID online; they can visit a PennDOT Driver’s License Center, have their documents verified and imaged, pay the one-time fee, and their REAL ID product will be mailed to them within 7-10 days; or they can visit one of up to 13 REAL ID Centers and receive their REAL ID product over-the-counter at the time of service. PennDOT is in the process of retrofitting six of its existing driver’s license centers to allow for over-the-counter issuance of REAL ID (Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre, Rockview in Centre County, Erie, Altoona and South 70th Street in Philadelphia) and adding five new locations in the following regions: Pittsburgh, King of Prussia, Allentown, Harrisburg, and Lancaster. REAL ID is optional for Pennsylvania residents. A federally-accepted form of identification (whether it’s the forthcoming Pennsylvania REAL ID driver’s license or ID card, a U.S. Passport/Passport Card, a military ID, etc.) must be used as identification to board a commercial flight or visit a secure federal building on and after October 1, 2020.There is no requirement that any resident obtain a REAL ID and PennDOT will continue to offer standard-issue driver’s licenses and photo IDs. More information about REAL ID in Pennsylvania, including frequently asked questions and information on documents required for REAL ID, can be found at www.penndot.gov/REALID.

WVIA Simply Grand Concert Season To Open PITTSTON, Pa. –Pianist Holly Roadfeldt opens the new season of WVIA’s live Simply Grand Concerts on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018 at 3 p.m. in the Sordoni High Definition Theater at the WVIA Public Media Studios in Pittston, PA. Dr. Roadfeldt will perform neglected pieces by composers such as Clara Schumann, Lili Boulanger, and Joan Tower. Seating is free, but limited. To make reservations call 570-655-2808 or reserve seats online at http://www.wvia.org/reservations. The concert will be recorded for future broadcast. Since making her orchestral debut with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra at the age of 13, Holly Roadfeldt has continued to be an active solo pianist and chamber musician performing standard and eclectic recital programs in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Holly’s mission is to inspire and advocate for piano music of the highest caliber and she regularly mixes newly composed music with established masterpieces. For her recent three-year endeavor “The Preludes Project”, she commissioned 16 composers to write preludes to be performed alongside works from the standard repertoire. Holly premiered 65 preludes in 17 states as a guest artist at multiple venues including the University of Missouri-Kansas City; Oklahoma State University; Wichita State University; the Peabody Institute; University of Nebraska-Kearney; Western Carolina University; Carson-Newman University; the College of Southern Maryland; Westminster College; the University at Albany; Manchester University; and Lafayette College. The Preludes Project CD is Holly’s debut solo album and was released by PARMA Recordings in November 2016. The double CD includes Chopin’s Op. 28 Preludes and Kirk O’Riordan’s Twenty-Six Preludes for Solo Piano (2014). Holly’s performance on this CD has been lauded as “utterly convincing [with]…every note of her Chopin sound [ing] fresh and alive and her varied touch perfectly match [ing] the mood of each piece — and all are conjured up with a breathtaking sense of elation.” (Raul da Gama, World Music Report). Núria Serra of Sonograma Magazine says the double album deserves “all our highest praise” for Holly’s “expression, agility and perfect articulation.” Additional reviewers describe Holly’s playing as “exquisite… demonstrating her excellent expressive abilities and technique.” (Cinemusical), state that “the clarity of [her] playing on the faster and more complicated preludes is jaw-dropping” (Mainly Piano) and “Roadfeldt plays all 50 pieces with finesse” (Infodad). A dedicated performer of contemporary music, Holly has premiered over 100 solo and chamber works. In 1996, she was awarded the prize for the “Best Performance of a 20th Century American Composition” in the Frinna Awerbuch International Piano Competition, which resulted in a performance in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Additional contemporary music honors include being a semi-finalist in the Concert Artists Guild International Competition in 1998 and 2001 as a contemporary music specialist. She has been delighted to premiere multiple works by Kirk O’Riordan, Kala Pierson, Kristin Kuster, Michelle McQuade Dewhirst, Anthony Donofrio, Stephen Dankner, Charles Peck, Daniel Perttu, and Aleksander Sternfeld-Dunn. As a chamber musician, Holly has performed with members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic, the Colorado Orchestra, and the Utah Symphony as well as with concert artists Alexa Still, Bonita Boyd, and Marcia Baldwin. She is also co-founder of the contemporary piano duo, duoARtia, which was formed with Jeri-Mae Astolfi in 2012. In March of 2013, she collaborated with the Marie Chouinard Dance Company from Montreal giving a live performance of Chopin’s 24 Preludes at Lafayette College in Easton, PA. Holly’s live recordings can be heard on the Kosei Publishing (Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue) and the Composers Union of Armenia (music by Gor Hovhannisyan) labels. Additionally, Holly recorded the music (solo and chamber) for Kirk O’Riordan’s Strange Flowers CD, which was released on November 19th, 2013 by PARMA Recordings described as “beautiful” by Donald Rosenberg in Gramophone. Holly’s performance of Mara Gibson’s Conundrums was included on the composer’s Sky-Born CD, also released by PARMA Recordings in November 2017. About Sky-Born, reviewers described Holly as “a vivid pianist” (Rosenberg, Gramophone), as a pianist who “performed with conviction” (Harris, Winnipeg Free Press) and someone “known perfectly for her seductive Preludes Project” (Marçal Borotau, Sonograma Magazine). Holly currently teaches at Lafayette College and serves as Artist Faculty with Distinction at The Music School of Delaware. Previously, she taught at the University of Delaware, Susquehanna University, Gettysburg College, the University of Colorado-Boulder, and Indiana University. Penn State Scranton Faculty Member Recognized Renee Bishop-Pierce, associate professor of biology at Penn State Scranton, has been asked to serve as guest editor of the international journal Frontiers. The special edition is titled “Revealing the Biodiversity for Hidden Marine Coastal Habitats.” “This special edition is a response to the international call for additional research in conservation to help identify habitats with species that are cryptic and promote protection of the coastal environment,” Bishop-Pierce said, explaining the focus and relevance of the publication. “This research and service to the profession also helps our campus and University address issues in sustainability.” The special publication addresses traditionally inaccessible ecosystems that are often overlooked when assessing biodiversity. It also will address the contribution these habitats have on coastal productivity. Bishop-Pierce serves as one of three editors for this international journal feature, which will be available this fall. “I have been asked to serve as editor because of my research on anchialine cave habitats and the impact of subterranean groundwater influx to the coastal environment,” she said. That article can be viewed here. Bishop-Pierce specializes in marine science with a focus on ecological physiology. To view the special edition of Frontiers, click here.
