MOOSIC, PA (January 3, 2018) – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders are now accepting resumes for their 2019 internship program.  The club is seeking interns in a variety of areas and will offer both paid and for-credit positions.

The RailRiders will have 2019 internships in the following areas/ fields: Box Office, Client/Corporate Services, Community Relations,  Game Operations, Marketing, Media Relations/ Broadcasting, Social Media and Ticket Sales.

DANVILLE, Pa. – Geisinger has long featured a MyEstimate® tool on its website to assist patients with determining possible out-of-pocket expenses for medical treatment. Now, Geisinger is including hospital charges for all of the organization’s hospital facilities, in compliance with new Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines that went into effect on Jan. 1, 2019.

The hospital charges are the same for all patients, and do not include physician charges which are billed separately.

SCRANTON, PA – The Northeast Regional Cancer Institute, a local community-based nonprofit organization, has released the latest “Cancer in Northeastern Pennsylvania: Incidence and Mortality for Common Cancers” surveillance report.  The report is available by clicking here.

This unique, locally focused report was compiled by Cancer Institute Surveillance Coordinator, Karen Ryczak, RN and Medical Director, Samuel Lesko, MD, MPH. The report documents that both incidence and mortality rates for cancer are significantly higher in NEPA than the US as a whole. It also identifies those cancer sites for which there is a disparity in either incidence or mortality. Of note, tobacco related cancers, such as lung, larynx, oral cavity, pharynx and bladder cancers are statistically significantly higher than the U.S. rate in both men and women.

Also noteworthy is an increase in the incidence of colorectal cancer in individuals under the age of 50, a trend that has also been documented in the U.S.  Although screening for this cancer is not routinely conducted among patients younger than 50 without specific risk factors, clinicians should consider the possibility of an underlying malignancy among patients with symptoms consistent with this diagnosis.  This may be especially true in northeast Pennsylvania where the incidence of colorectal cancer is higher than the U.S. average.

The goal in sharing these data is to raise awareness across the community and to promote collaborative efforts to reduce the risk of select cancers through healthy lifestyle choices and adherence to proper screening guidelines. The report offers important insight for Northeastern Pennsylvania residents, health professionals, and government leaders.

DALLAS TWP., Pa. – The Department of History and Government at Misericordia University is sponsoring the panel presentation, “Writing Coal Country Literature: Commentaries on Fiction, Nonfiction and Drama,’’ on Sunday, Jan. 27 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in observance of Anthracite Mining Heritage Month.

Hosted by the Mary Kintz Bevevino Library, the free presentation features scholars, thespians and authors in the Catherine Evans McGowan Room. Panelists include Professor William Conlogue, Ph.D., Marywood University; Michael Cotter, playwright, director and producer; Lucia Dailey, writer, teacher and performer; Tom Granahan, writer; Professor William Kashatus, Ph.D., Luzerne County Community College, and Rick Sedlisky, writer. DALLAS TWP., Pa. – Featuring sculptures that involve thousands of sheets of paper that can be stretched across the room and photographs accented by three-dimensional household objects, the Pauly Friedman Art Gallery at Misericordia University is expecting to wow audiences with the exhibit. “Emerging Dimensions: Works by Li Hongbo and Cai Dongdong,” beginning Jan. 12. The exhibit runs through March 24.

A free opening reception will be held Friday, Jan. 18 from 4-6 p.m., with a snow date of Friday, Feb. 1. Phil Cai, gallery manager of the Eli Klein Gallery in New York City, will be the featured guest. She will represent the artists, who are based in Beijing.

Paper sculptor Hongbo carves through blocks of thousands of sheets of paper so the final artwork is no longer a fragile, static, two-dimensional sheet, but an elastic sculpture that can be stretched across the gallery. Li has several videos online that show his sculptures stretching.

The Friedman Gallery will hold live demonstrations of Hongbo’s work in which gallery staff will lift part of a sculpture and stretch it across the gallery and then return it to its original state. Demonstrations will are on Fridays at 10 a.m., 12 noon, and 2 p.m. throughout the exhibit schedule. Dongdong, a former documentary photographer for the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, began adding dimension to his unused photographs through readymade objects, including mirrors, a shovel, and a faucet, to challenge the belief that photographs portray reality. The resulting artwork introduces a new dimension to the history and the act of viewing a photograph. Cai was recently featured in the New York Times as a noteworthy entry in the Paris Photo Fair.

Both artists are represented in the collections of China’s Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum.

Scranton, PA (December 19, 2018) — Marywood University was recently notified that it is the recipient of the Moses Taylor Foundation Grant in the amount of $103,147 to purchase an Anatomage Table. The Table will enhance the University’s ability to train students on state-of-the-art equipment, and will be utilized in multiple health-related educational programs, including the Physician Assistant, Nutrition and Athletic Training, Nursing, and Communication Sciences and Disorders programs.

The Anatomage Table is the most technologically advanced anatomy visualization system on the market. It is both a virtual library of human and animal cadavers, as well as a clinical diagnostic tool by visualization of any Medical CT, CBCT, or MRI Scan.

The Board of Directors of Moses Taylor Foundation has announced its 2018-2019 second quarter grants, awarding a total of $4,984,622 to eleven organizations that advance the Foundation’s mission of promoting health and wellness throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania. “With investments including health care workforce development, mental health and counseling services, and capacity building, these 2018-2019 second quarter grants support our partners’ efforts to improve both the health of individuals and of organizations in the communities we serve,” said LaTida Smith, Moses Taylor Foundation President and CEO.
