Norwood & St. Lawrence Locomotive No. 210 being transferred to NY The historic Norwood & St. Lawrence Railroad Locomotive No. 210 will be transferred from Steamtown National Historic Site to the St. Lawrence Power & Equipment Museum in New York, marking the successful completion of a complex, multi-year effort to ensure the locomotive’s long-term preservation and interpretation in the region where it spent nearly its entire operating career. “Returning No. 210 to its place of origin is an excellent example of responsible stewardship strengthening the entire railroad preservation community,” said Jeremy Komasz, superintendent of Steamtown National Historic Site. “Successfully transferring the locomotive to an organization dedicated to preserving its local history allows its story to be told where it is most meaningful.” Built in 1923 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in Schenectady, New York, No. 210 served the Norwood & St. Lawrence Railroad for decades, becoming an enduring part of the industrial and transportation history of northern New York. Steamtown National Historic Site connects visitors with the history of American railroading and its profound influence on the nation’s industrial, commercial, and social development through the preservation of historic locomotives, rolling stock, railroad infrastructure, museum collections, archives, and the continued operation of historic railroad equipment. The transfer highlights the collaborative nature of historic preservation throughout the United States. The National Park Service, museums, historical societies, nonprofit organizations, volunteers, and local communities each play an essential role in preserving America’s railroad heritage. By working together, these organizations help ensure that historic resources remain accessible, relevant, and available to educate and inspire future generations. No. 210 moving back to northern New York represents an important milestone but should not be viewed as establishing a routine process. The transfer was the culmination of a lengthy effort with unique historical, legal, operational, and stewardship considerations involving federal law and policy review and extensive coordination between federal and state agencies and the receiving organization. The transfer also supports the park’s long-term stewardship strategy to allocate preservation funding, restoration capacity, track space, and staff resources on nationally significant locomotives, passenger cars, freight equipment, railroad structures, and infrastructure that collectively tell the broad story of American railroading.
Steamtown National Historic Site to Launch Summer Schedule Steamtown National Historic Site will transition to its summer schedule and increase in-park operations and experiences starting on Saturday, May 3. The park and its buildings will remain free to enter, daily summer hours will expand to 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Technology Museum will reopen, and the park will fire up its popular“Scranton Limited” yard shuttles—short train rides that offer visitors a front-row seat to the sights, sounds and motion of a working rail yard, all set within the park’s historic landscape.“Scranton Limited” yard shuttle schedule:May: Short train rides will operate Saturdays and Sundays at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.June–July: Short train rides will expand to Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, at the same departure times.Ticket Prices: Ages 0–5: $1 Ages 6 and older: $6 Tickets are valid for the entire day of purchase. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis; passengers should arrive 15 to 20 minutes before departure to secure a seat. Operations are subject to change due to weather, mechanical issues or crew availability. Summer and Autumn Rail Experiences at Steamtown NHS Steamtown National Historic Site encourages you to make the most of the summer season and invites you to ride the rails! Rail experiences vary from short 30-minute trips exploring the park’s historic railroad yard to full-day trips through the Poconos. Short train rides, the Scranton Limited and Caboose Experience, are offered Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. New for the 2022 season, all ticket sales will be credit card only. Visitors are now able to purchase advance tickets for our summer excursions (Jul.-Aug.) online through recreation.gov or on-site at our Information Kiosk during regular business hours of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, daily. Tickets for our short train rides, the Scranton Limited and Caboose Experience, are not available online or for advance purchase and must be purchased on-site at the Information Kiosk, the day of your visit. Those looking to plan for our autumn excursions (Sep.-Oct.), will be able to purchase tickets starting Friday, July 15th. Short Train Rides – offered through November 5, 2022: The Scranton Limited or the Caboose Experience will operate on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, as staffing permits. Departure times are: 10:30am, 11:30am, 1:15pm, and 2:30pm.Tickets are $6 for adults and kids over the age of 5; kids 5 and under are free. Tickets must be purchased on-site at the Information Kiosk, the day of your visit. On dates we run our longer excursions, Short Train Rides may be cancelled due to limited crew availability.
