Regional Hospital of Scranton receives nationwide recognition Commonwealth Health Regional Hospital of Scranton has been named one of only 100 hospitals nationwide to receive the American College of Cardiology (ACC) HeartCARE Center designation. This is ACC’s highest recognition for hospitals and health systems that provide cardiovascular care. The HeartCARE Center designation was established in 2018 and recognizes hospitals that demonstrate an exceptional commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered cardiovascular care. “This recognition is a testament to the expertise and commitment of our entire cardiovascular team,” said Michael B. Registration open for Geisinger’s 2026 cooking classes Geisinger is offering free in-person and virtual cooking classes this summer. The culinary medicine classes combine the art of cooking with the science of nutrition and offer an evidence-based approach to health. A registered dietician will lead the classes and talk about healthy meals, portion sizes, label reading, snacking, eating behaviors, kitchen safety and good shopping habits. Two local Geisinger facilities to introduce entrance screenings Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center is expected to introduce security screenings at its public entrances by the end of the summer, followed by Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton in the fall. This is part of the health system’s commitment to creating safe and secure hospital environments. Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital will also implement the screenings starting on Monday, July 13. Since March, the health system has begun screening for weapons at the entrances of Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre, Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital and Geisinger Medical Center Muncy. “Just in a short time, this screening program has already identified and helped keep hundreds of weapons, such as knives and handguns, out of our hospitals,” said Sean McGinley, associate vice president of police and security operations for Geisinger. “We have, unfortunately, seen an increase of violent action against our staff, and this is one of many tools we use to make sure we have a safe environment for everyone who comes to Geisinger.” Weapons of any kind, including firearms and knives, are prohibited from all Geisinger facilities. Any weapon found during a screening must be returned to the individual’s vehicle. Patients, staff and visitors are all subject to security screenings.
Ritter’s Winery accepting artist submissions for upcoming Art Walk event Ritter’s Winery & Cidery in Lake Ariel is accepting submissions from local artists for its outdoor Food + Wine + Design: Art Walk and Book Release event on Friday, July 31, 2026. The event, from 6:00-9:00 pm, will feature the release of The Designer’s Palate: A Farm to Table Fabulous Cookbook by Kimberly Storm Ritter, and organizers of the event want to involve the art community as well. The Wright Center for Community Health Tunkhannock Launches Dental Services for Children and Adults The Wright Center for Community Health Tunkhannock will begin offering dental services at its community health center in the Wyoming County Healthcare Center. Beginning Monday, Aug. 3, dental services for children and adults will be available between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday at The Wright Center for Community Health Tunkhannock, 5950 U.S. Route 6, Suite 401. Appointments can be made now by calling 570-591-5299. Dr. Frank Pagano, a dentist with more than 30 years of experience, will lead the dental clinic. He and other members of The Wright Center for Community Health’s team, including a dental hygienist, will provide affordable, high-quality oral care services, including routine exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments, fillings, extractions, restorations, dentures, and other procedures. “We know there is a significant need for dental care in Tunkhannock and throughout Wyoming County, and the response from the community has already been tremendous, with patients calling to schedule appointments,” said Kimberly McGoff, director of dental services at The Wright Center for Community Health. “By expanding access to essential oral health services in this rural community, we are helping remove barriers to care and advancing our mission to improve the health and well-being of the people we serve across the region.” The community health center accepts most dental insurances, including Delta Dental, Guardian, United Concordia, and Medical Assistance (Medicaid). Big Boy No. 4014 brought estimated $16-$17 million in revenue to northeastern PA The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce and Steamtown National Historic Site are celebrating the tremendous success of Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 visit to Scranton, an event that captivated tens of thousands of visitors and generated an estimated $16 million to $17 million in economic impact throughout northeastern Pennsylvania. The historic locomotive’s appearance at Steamtown National Historic Site marked one of the region’s largest tourism events in recent years, drawing railroad enthusiasts, families and visitors from across the country to experience the rare opportunity to see the world’s largest operating steam locomotive. SWB RailRider named International League Pitcher of the Month Minor League Baseball announced Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s Brendan Beck was named the International League’s Pitcher of the Month for June 2026. Beck held a 1.24 earned run average in five June starts. During this time, he also worked 29 frames, earning three wins and no losses. He was named Pitcher of the Week twice in Summer 2026. The Yankees selected the 27-year-old in the 2nd round of the 2021 draft out of Stanford University.
