UNC Receives Generous Donation Presented by Fastenal Company United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania (UNC) is one of the recipients of the annual BK5K 5-kilometer road race and walk presented by Fastenal Company. A check for $3,000 was recently presented to UNC and will directly support renovations at our Progressive Child Care Center to purchase new classroom equipment. The 2024 BK5K was held on July 19, 2025, at Nay Aug Park in Scranton. The BK5K was created to honor Bob Kierlin, founder of Fastenal Company and lifelong supporter of youth initiatives. The event, which includes multiple races around the world, raises hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to benefit local youth programs. UNC operates three licensed child care centers in Lackawanna County, offering affordable, high-quality early education and after-school programs that foster growth, learning, and social development. UNC Launches Free Strengthening Families Program United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania (UNC), in partnership with the Carbondale Area School District and PROSPER Partnerships, will offer the Strengthening Families Program (SFP) for Parents and Youth ages 10–14 this fall. The seven-week series helps families build stronger relationships and supports children as they transition into the teen years. The program runs Thursdays, October 2 through November 13, 2025, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Carbondale Area Elementary School. Each session begins with a free family dinner at 5:30 p.m. and includes on-site childcare for younger siblings. Families who participate are eligible for weekly prizes such as board games, gift cards, and movie passes. Parents and caregivers learn practical strategies for setting loving limits, creating household routines, encouraging positive behavior, managing stress, and preventing substance misuse. Youth in fifth and sixth grade build skills to prepare for the teen years, communicate effectively with parents, handle stress and peer pressure, and make healthy choices. Extended Hours at UNC’s Angel’s Attic Food and Clothing Pantry United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania (UNC) is proud to announce extended hours at our Angel’s Attic Food & Clothing Pantry, now open every Tuesday until 7 PM. The new evening hours, which began on April 22, 2025, are designed to better support working individuals and families who may struggle to visit the pantry during traditional daytime hours. “We understand that many of the people we serve are balancing jobs, school, and family responsibilities,” said Jessica Wallo, Director of Community Services. “By staying open later on Tuesdays, we hope to make it easier for more of our neighbors to access our services for the first time and learn about all that we offer. We’re seeing more people explore the option of receiving help, and we’re happy to make that process easier, without requiring them to sacrifice work hours or other commitments.” UNC’s Angel’s Attic Food & Clothing Pantry offers a variety of fresh food, gently used clothing, household items, and personal care essentials — all free of charge to those in need. The extended hours are part of UNC’s ongoing efforts to reduce barriers and expand access to critical community resources.
