‘Misericordia in Bloom’ Gala Misericordia University will host ‘Misericordia in Bloom,’ the 2022 Trustee Associates Gala and Inaugural Celebration, on Saturday, April 23 on campus. The festive evening with an exceptional flower show theme, will celebrate the inauguration of Misericordia’s 15thPresident Daniel J. Myers, Ph.D., and will offer appreciation to Trustee Associate benefactors who generously donate to the university. In addition, the event will recognize the successful completion of Misericordia’s largest campaign to date, Now for Tomorrow: The Campaign for Misericordia University, and honor two of Misericordia’s most special alumnae, Mercy Mission Medal recipient Joan Krause, Class of 1958, of Nanticoke; and Trustee Associates Award recipient Nancy Smith Lynch, Class of 1968, of Glen Head, New York. The event will feature fabulous food and signature drinks with dancing to the music of Vinyl Groov. The Dime Bank Donated $31,000 for Scholarship Opportunities The Dime Bank donated $31,000 through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program to various educational institutions for scholarship opportunities: $18,000 was donated to Penngift Foundation of which $9,500 was allocated for St. Dominic’s Academy for their pre-k through 8th grade programs, $6,000 was allocated to Canaan Christian Academy for their elementary and secondary Christian education program scholarships, and $2,500 was allocated to Grace Ridge School to be used for their programs’ tuition assistance; $7,500 was donated to the United Way of Lackawanna and Wayne Counties to be used for pre-kindergarten program scholarships; $2,000 was donated to Yeshiva Beth Moshe for Scranton Hebrew Day school scholarships for Jewish and secular education; $2,000 was donated to Diocese of Scranton for their Catholic schools tuition assistance program; $1,500 was donated to the Greater Pike Community Foundation to be used for pre-k scholarship opportunities at Center for Developmental Disabilities (CDD) or Green Trees Early Learning Center in Milford, PA. FNCB Bank Donates $9,500 in Support of STEAM Programs FNCB Bank, locally-based since 1910, has announced a $9,500 Pennsylvania Education Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) donation to the Howard Gardner MI Charter School in Scranton. FNCB’s grant was used to support the Arts Alliance and STEAM Camp programs. Middle school students ventured into coding drones and designed a special coding course for kindergarten through second grade students. Students in K-2 participated in both in-school and after school programs entitled “Coding Around the World.” Since 2010, FNCB has contributed just under $2,500,000 to local educational and scholarship organizations through the EITC initiative. The support of the Howard Gardner School is part of FNCB’s larger Community Caring initiative. As a true, local community bank, FNCB Bank is making a difference through volunteerism, donations and outreach programs.
Johnson College will Host STEM Degrees Event On Thursday, April 21, 2022, Johnson College is holding a Diving Into The STEM Degrees event from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Moffat Student Center on its campus in Scranton. Prospective students, parents, teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators from local high schools interested in learning more about the College’s STEM-focused 2-year academic degree programs are encouraged to attend. Program Directors and instructors from the College’s Biomedical Equipment Technology, Electronic Engineering Technology, Advanced Manufacturing Technology, and Mechatronics Technology programs will discuss each program’s hands-on curriculum, overall learning goals, and career opportunities. NASA Astronaut to Speak at Misericordia The Murgas Amateur Radio Club and the Misericordia University College of Arts and Sciences will host NASA Astronaut Colonel Douglas H. Wheelock, U.S. Army Retired, on Wednesday, April 6 in the Henry Science Center Room HEN 210/212 on the Misericordia University Campus. The event will begin at 7:00 p.m. Colonel Wheelock will discuss his experiences as an astronaut, including his time on the International Space Station. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited. Registration is required at https://www.misericordia.edu/colonel-wheelock-speaking-engagement Colonel Wheelock was selected by NASA in 1998. He was assigned to the Astronaut Office International Space Station (ISS) Operations Branch as a Russian liaison, participating in the testing and integration of Russian hardware and software products developed for the ISS. He worked extensively with the Energia Aerospace Company in Moscow, Russia, and has led joint U.S./Russian teams to oversee bench reviews, inventory, loading and launch of the first four unmanned ISS resupply capsules. The retired Colonel has accumulated more than 178 days in space and has conducted six spacewalks totaling more than 43 hours. Wheelock flew on STS-120 in 2007 and in 2010 he served as a flight engineer for Expedition 24 and commander for Expedition 25, where he conducted three unplanned spacewalks to replace a faulty ammonia pump module. The native of New York holds a bachelor’s degree in applied science and engineering from the United States Military Academy West Point and a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA.
