Groundhog Day isn’t just about predicting the weather. This February 2nd, students across Lackawanna County will get a glimpse into their own futures during Groundhog Job Shadow Day! Designed for students in grades 5–8, this exciting event connects classrooms with local businesses to explore real-world careers and industries in our region.

Students will depart from their schools at 9:00 a.m. and spend two hours at a local business, observing professionals in action, learning about different roles, and discovering how school subjects connect to the world of work. This immersive experience helps spark curiosity, build awareness, and plant the seeds for future career pathways.

For Businesses: Host a Class & Inspire Future Talent

Local businesses are invited to host a class of students and introduce them to your company, industry, and workforce. Whether you’re in manufacturing, healthcare, business services, or beyond—your support helps inspire the next generation of professionals.

Host Information:

  • Event Date: Friday, February 2, 2026
  • Snow Date: Tuesday, February 4, 2026
  • Student Arrival Time: Between 9:15-9:30 a.m.
  • Job Shadow Duration: Two hours
  • Location: Your workplace
  • Group Size: One full class (15–25 students + chaperones)
  • Deadline to Sign Up: November 3, 2025

Skills in Scranton will coordinate all transportation and student pairings—just prepare a brief, engaging agenda to share your work world with students.

For Schools: Give Your Students a Glimpse of the Future

Groundhog Job Shadow Day brings career exploration to life. Classes of 5th–8th grade students will travel to a local business where they’ll observe professionals, ask questions, and learn about the opportunities that exist right here in Lackawanna County.

What’s Included:

  • Students depart their schools at 9:00 a.m.
  • Two-hour job shadowing experience at a local business
  • Return to school before lunch
  • Transportation provided and organized by Skills in Scranton
  • Snow date: February 4, 2025
  • Business placements based on student interests and availability

Transportation Provided

Skills in Scranton will cover all transportation costs and handle the logistics. We’ll work directly with school staff to coordinate pick-up and drop-off schedules once matches are finalized.
