New Story to Host Autism Symposium

New Story Throop, located at 751 Keystone Industrial Park Rd. in Throop, Pa. (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area), will hold an autism symposium with community member Dolphus Teart as part of its Spotlight Speaker Series at the school building on Jan. 26, from 2-4 p.m. This event will focus on giving support and advice to families living with autism.
The child-friendly event, which is free for parents and caregivers of individuals with special needs in the community, will include movies, games, and snacks. The main feature at the event will be an inspirational speech from Teart, focusing on: raising a child with autism, the toll this took on his family, and how New Story Schools and Services assisted in helping his son Tevon and his family live the best life possible.
Teart has been a longtime advocate, supporter and volunteer, serving for three autism organizations and supporting many others. Teart’s son, Tevon, is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. In his more than 20 years working in the autism community, Teart has made a major impact, serving more than 15,000 individuals and their families.
Teart has been a member of S.A.F.E (Supporting Autism and Families Everywhere) since 1995, has worked with Autism Awareness NEPA on its Autism Awareness Walk/Autism Candlelight Vigil since it started more than 13 years ago, and is also the co-founder of Parents & Professionals, which provides socialization experiences such as group outings, events and trips for families dealing with autism.
New Story Throop is a private licensed academic school that provides special education and behavioral health services to children from ages 5-21 who have been diagnosed with autism or emotional/behavioral health disorders. New Story Schools provide education, therapy, counseling, related services and transition training for students, with the hope of returning them to their home district. Throop is one of 15 New Story Schools and Services locations in the state of Pennsylvania.
