Lackawanna College breaks record enrollment for 2018-19 academic year

SCRANTON, Pa. – Lackawanna College is hosting a record 830 freshmen, with the opening of classes for the 2018-19 fall semester, reflecting Lackawanna College’s largest enrollment ever at 1,770 total students across its seven locations. This reflects an approximate 10% increase in student population over the 2017-2018 academic year.

The record-breaking enrollment can be attributed to the College’s innovative expansion efforts: the introduction of bachelor’s degrees, expanded facilities, and a variety of cutting-edge programs that address the immediate needs of students in the area.

“We recognize that there’s more information available than ever for students planning their future. People are very aware of the importance of choosing relevant, career-focused majors and are looking for options that allow them to manage the long-term debt associated with higher education. Lackawanna continues to be able to provide a high quality, career-focused education at an affordable cost to students throughout northeast Pennsylvania,” said T.J. Eltringham, Lackawanna College Vice President for Enrollment Management.

Knowing that the cost of college tuition is a concern for most incoming freshmen and their parents, Lackawanna introduced the Level-Up program in April of this year. This partnership with 20 area school districts at various stages of development and implementation allows students to earn an associate degree in select majors while still in high school through a combination of dual enrollment classes offered on-site at each partner school district, evening or late afternoon classes on site at Lackawanna, online classes, and summer terms. The Level Up program dramatically reduces the per-credit rate for classes to make a college education more attainable for the region’s students.

Along with Level-Up, Lackawanna was also was the first College to launch a scholarship-supported collegiate esports program in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The College recently announced that the program has become a member of the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE). NACE is the only association of college and university sponsored esports programs that promotes the education and development of students through intercollegiate esports.

Lackawanna College continues to expand its main campus to provide exceptional facilities for its students. The College will soon complete the restoration of the Culinary Center complex located at 409 Adams Avenue, which will house new industrial teaching kitchens for the Hospitality and Culinary Arts programs, Baking and Pastry program, student study space, and a student dining commons.
