McCarthy Tire Service to Acquire 16 Locations from GCR Tires & Service
The deal expands national tire dealer’s service network in southeastern United States.
WILKES-BARRE, PA, July 2, 2019 – McCarthy Tire Service, a family-owned company and one of the top independent tire dealers in the United States, signed an agreement with Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, LLC, a subsidiary of Bridgestone Americas, Inc., to purchase thirteen GCR Tires & Service stores and three retread tire manufacturing plants. McCarthy Tire expects to close on the locations in August.
The acquisition includes retail tire stores, commercial tire, mechanical service facilities, and Bandag-system retread manufacturing plants in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. All locations are slated to remain open after the transition.
“Many of our customers are large regional or national fleets,” said John D. McCarthy Jr., president of McCarthy Tire Service. “Adding the GCR Tires locations to our network in the mid-Atlantic and southern states expands our services and 24-hour road call program to trucking and logistics companies, as well as to heavy construction and mining customers.”
McCarthy Tire Service is owned and operated by the McCarthy family. Joseph J. McCarthy started the company in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, in 1926. Prior to this acquisition, the company had 54 service locations and seven retread tire manufacturing plants in nine states from Georgia to New York. McCarthy Tire employs close to 1,200 associates. It remains headquartered in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
Specializing in fleet service, McCarthy Tire provides tires and service to commercial trucking firms, industrial, mining, and construction customers, municipalities, utility and service fleets, and passenger vehicles.
Scott Damon, president, Commercial Group, U.S. and Canada, Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, notes, “This transaction is an important step in Bridgestone’s ongoing effort to evolve our commercial tire distribution strategies to better meet the needs of fleet customers. Partnering with McCarthy Tire will strengthen our distribution network along the east coast.”
McCarthy Tire and the GCR Tires stores included in the sale will conduct business separately until the transaction closes.
