Smith and Leanna Crawford.

SCRANTON, PA (October 11, 2018)—Marywood University’s Office of Military and Veteran Services and the Student Veteran Alliance will lead activities to honor those who are serving and who have served our country on Friday, November 9, 2018, at 11 a.m., at the Field of Flags, in Tree Stadium, next to Marywood’s Veterans Resource Center, 2236 N. Washington Avenue, Scranton, Pa., on the University’s campus.
Marywood University trumpeters will play “Echo TAPS,” surrounding the nearly 7,000 flags which represent fallen troops from the Global Wars on Terrorism in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and New Dawn. The event is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served following the Veterans Day Ceremony.
Christopher Smith, director of the Office of Military and Veteran Services at Marywood University said, “This year, lighting has been added to the Field of Flags. We knew we wanted to implement lighting to the flags this year, especially since the United States flag should always be lit at night.”
In addition to the Field of Flags, which will be on display from November 1 – November 14, 2018, Tom Tice from Warrior Strong will serve as the guest speaker at the Veterans Day Ceremony at Marywood University. Warrior Strong will also provide a free yoga class for veterans and dependents at Marywood University’s Veterans Resource Center on November 9, 2018, at 2 p.m. The class is also available to non-military community members and is donation based.
Warrior Strong is an adaptive workout facility that offers veterans four core services including: an adaptive workout facility, free personal training certification, occupational and mental health therapy; and networking and socialization for veterans.
The community will meet again at 9 p.m., on November 9, 2018, at Marywood University’s Veterans Resource Center for light refreshments and a candlelight vigil.
Mr. Smith said, “Veterans Days gives the Marywood community and the public the opportunity to pray, reflect, and honor those who have served or are serving, as well as those service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”
