March is National Nutrition Month—Chamber member Talia Walsh of Quest Studio has prepared a series of member guest blogs to help other members discover new ways to keep healthy throughout the year!

Think about how many hours it’s been since your last meal. Oftentimes, my clients think skipping breakfast will help them lose weight when, in reality, it may cause your body to begin to store fat as an energy source. Over time, this results in the increased possibility of weight gain. It’s time to Break the Fast: eating within an hour of waking provides the body and brain with fuel after fasting overnight and is essential to kickstart your metabolism and allow your body to burn energy more quickly. Taking a few extra minutes to prepare breakfast could make a big impact on your day. Research shows that eating a healthy and balanced breakfast helps to:

  • Boost your metabolism
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Improve your concentration (especially in children), mood and memory
  • Maintain blood glucose levels
  • Increase strength and endurance for exercise and physical activity
  • Lower cholesterol levels
  • Decrease your overall calorie intake each day

What does a healthy and balanced breakfast look like? Mix foods with a variety of nutrients that are high in vitamins and minerals, including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, low or non-fat dairy and lean protein (to keep you fuller longer).

Here are some quick and easy healthy breakfast ideas:

  • Hardboiled egg with whole-wheat toast
  • Greek yogurt with fresh fruit and low-fat granola
  • Bowl of whole grain cereal with berries and skim milk
  • Smoothie or a balanced meal replacement shake
  • Low fat cottage cheese with fruit
  • Overnight oatmeal with skim milk, nuts and fruit
  • Half an avocado on a whole grain English muffin
  • Egg white veggie muffins baked with low-fat cheese
  • Whole wheat wrap with peanut butter and banana

Don’t forget to prepare healthy snacks to keep you fueled until lunch!
