Ahhh....the
great outdoors.
In Scranton, we
feel sorry for those communities like San Diego and Tampa with their so-called
"perfect" year- round climates. Where's the fun in having the
same pleasant weather day after day after day?
We love our four seasons.
Our warm spring days, cool summer nights, spectacular fall foliage, and
blustery, snowy winters (okay, three out of four's not bad) give us a
chance to enjoy Mother Nature in all her glory.
Speaking of winter,
Northeastern Pennsylvania is one of the most popular ski destinations
on the East Coast. No less than 13 ski resorts stripe our regional mountainsides
and one of them, the Montage Ski Resort,
is located just five miles from Downtown Scranton.
Cross-country
skiing, snowmobiling and snowboarding are just a few of the additional
wintertime activities residents and visitors enjoy. Every December, our
County Commissioners even set up an outdoor, National Hockey League-sized
ice skating rink at Lackawanna County Stadium. The construction of several
indoor ice rinks in the 1990's has even led to a "mini-boom"
of youth and adult hockey leagues (and a corresponding rise in income
for area dentists!)

our ski resorts and other wintertime activities in Northeastern PA visit

Camping is big news during the warmer months. Campers travel to Northeastern
Pennsylvania from all over the country to enjoy our spectacular scenery,
hiking trails, swimming areas and fishing streams. To find a list of all
Pennsylvania state parks (most of which feature campsites) click

Northeastern
PA's many lakes and streams make for excellent boating, water skiing,
swimming and fishing. For example, Lake Wallenpaupack, a 5,700-acre lake
built by Pennsylvania Power & Light Company in the 1920's, has a 52-mile
shoreline and has become a favorite recreational spot for boaters and
fishermen. Cruising, water-skiing and sailing are popular activities on
the lake and PPL Utilities campground directors maintain boat ramps and
slip dock rentals at the lake's four recreational areas. For more information
