The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce is proud to welcome the American Assembly to Scranton on September 24, 2008 at the Hilton Scranton & Conference Center.

The American Assembly is a national, non-partisan public affairs forum illuminating issues of public policy by commissioning research and publications, sponsoring meetings, and issuing reports, books, and other literature. Its initiatives facilitate communication and action among decision makers, lawmakers, and other leading authorities representing a broad spectrum of views and interests from all sectors. Its reports and other publications are used by government and community, by civic leaders and public officials. Founded by Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1950, The American Assembly is affiliated with Columbia University.

This day long event will feature numerous speakers including a tentative keynote address by The Honorable Edward G. Rendell. David H. Mortimer, President of the American Assembly, will provide a background on the organization.

The first panel of the day, featuring Paul C. Brophy, Principal of Brophy and Reilly LLC and Author of "Retooling for Growth," will discuss business creation and growth, human capital development, and quality of place. Immediately following, a panel of local experts will respond and field questions about how initiatives and recommendations apply to Northeastern Pennsylvania.

A panel on workforce development will also be held, featuring Richard M. McGahey of the Ford Foundation. This panel will also include a response portion from regional experts.

The final panel will discuss Buy Local initiatives and anchor institutions and will feature Michael Shuman- Vice President for Enterprise Development, Training and Development Corporation.
