Tomorrow's Leaders Today is an award winning youth development initiative established by Skills in Scranton in 1997. It is designed to identify high school juniors who demonstrate leadership abilities and prepares young people for committed involvement and responsible participation in the future of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
A class of approximately 35 students representing various geographic areas and high schools are selected through an application process. A series of 8 monthly all day sessions acquaint participants with community needs, problems and resources. Students have the opportunity to meet community leaders and decision makers as well as students from other high schools; collaborative decision making combines with actual problem solving experiences as participants explore the challenges and opportunities of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
The 1997/98 class was recognized by the Economic Development Council of Northeast Pennsylvania for the creation of the Community Volunteer Calendar. The calendar which is published the last Sunday of each month in The Sunday Times, recognizes the fact that many non-profit, volunteer driven organizations are constantly seeking new volunteers for one-time or short-term projects. The Community Volunteer Calendar helps solve the needs of the organizations and people of all ages who desire to connect with their community in a positive and productive manner.
High school students of today are the community and business leaders of tomorrow. Tomorrow's Leaders Today seeks to prepare future adult leaders for these roles. Teamwork, communication, and practical analytical skills are stressed in an attempt to develop a level of mutual trust and respect among the members of the class.
