Nineteen Mini-Grants totaling $9,432 were awarded to teachers for the 2007/08 academic year, according to Dr. Gerald Burns, chair of the Mini-Grants for Teachers program. The grants were recently issued at a reception for teachers, principals, superintendents, and contributors. Forty-five grant applications seeking in excess of $25,000 were submitted.
Skills in Scranton, the business-education partnership of the Chamber, has awarded these grants annually since 1990. Mini-Grants for Teachers has awarded more than $247,000 to 510 teachers in northeastern Pennsylvania that have affected thousands of students annually from pre-school through 12th grade. Grants are awarded annually to teachers in 20 school districts in NEIU 19, the Diocese of Scranton, and day care programs in Lackawanna County. Funding for this program has been made possible by a grant from the Scranton Area Foundation and the continued generosity of the business community.
Grant winning programs cover a wide variety of topics, including “The Secret of the Priest's Grotto - a Holocaust Survivor's Story,” “When I Grow Up - Preparing Northeastern Pennsylvania Students for the 21st Century Workforce,” “ABC's of Literary Writing,” “The Physics of Sports,” “Real Life in our Valley,” “Creating Constructive Leaders,” “Food Sanitation Experiments,” “Model Rocketry,” and others.
